Rooting for Water: Stakeholders Hide To Catchment Area Conservation Call!

In a powerful demonstration of environmental responsibility, diverse stakeholders came together to answer the call to protect one of Zomba’s most critical water sources—the Mulunguzi catchment area. Under the theme “Rooting for Water,” the initiative aimed not only to plant trees but to cultivate a culture of long-term conservation rooted in action, awareness, and partnership.

The campaign saw the successful planting of 4,000 indigenous tree seedlings on Mulunguzi Mountain, thanks to the joint efforts of the Southern Region Water Board (SRWB), Public Relations Society of Malawi (PRISM), Friends of Mulunguzi Dam, and students from the University of Malawi. Their collective action was driven by a deep understanding of the link between healthy forests and reliable water supply.
The event served as a vivid reminder that water security begins with healthy ecosystems. It was also a celebration of community-led conservation, powered by collaboration across sectors and generations.

During the event, speakers were unanimous in stressing that while planting trees is an important start, the real impact lies in their protection and survival. They called for long-term commitment to the cause of protecting the trees that had been planted.
