Southern Region Water Board has been internationally recognized for its outstanding efforts in environmental preservation, particularly in catchment area management.
The recognition came during a partnership conference held on 18 May 2022 in the Netherlands, hosted by Vitens Evides International (VEI). The event brought together 35 utility service partners from around the world. Among them, SRWB emerged as the best-performing utility in the area of catchment area conservation, earning praise for its proactive and sustainable initiatives.
The award followed SRWB’s signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Department of Forestry, which granted the Board the responsibility to manage part of Mulunguzi Mountain at Kuchawe. Through this agreement, SRWB has been planting indigenous trees along the catchment area to preserve the water source while protecting the forest from illegal logging and firewood collection.

To celebrate the achievement locally, a ceremonial handover of the award was held on Tuesday, 8 June 2022 at the T&D Conference Centre in Zomba, where VEI Project Manager, Mrs. Dana van der Velden, officially presented the award to SRWB Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Duncan Chambamba, in the presence of members of the media and key stakeholders.
This milestone reflects SRWB’s ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability and water resource protection, aligning with its broader mission to provide safe, reliable water while preserving ecosystems for future generations.
