SRWB LAUNCHES TRANSFORMATIVE WATER PROJECT FOR LIWONDE AND BALAKA TOWNS.

The Southern Region Water Board (SRWB) on Tuesday 31 March 2026, officially
launched the Improvement of Liwonde-Balaka Water Supply Project, marking a
significant milestone in efforts to enhance access to safe and reliable water to people in
the region.
The landmark ceremony took place at the SRWB water treatment plant along the banks
of the Shire River in Liwonde, Machinga District, bringing together government officials,
development partners, and community representatives.
Speaking during the event, SRWB Board Chairperson, Eng. Hutchison Mthinda,
reaffirmed the Board’s commitment to supporting national development priorities.
“The Board is committed to complementing government’s efforts in ensuring that all
people have access to potable water. The launch of this project is a clear demonstration
of that commitment,” he said.
He further expressed sincere appreciation to the Government of Malawi and the
European Investment Bank (EIB) for financing the project, describing their support as
critical to improving water service delivery in the two districs.
Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development, Hon. Thoko Tembo,
hailed the project as a major step forward in addressing water challenges in Liwonde
and Balaka.
“I am very pleased with this development. It will not only improve access to water but
also ease the burden on women who travel long distances to fetch water. The project will enhance socio-economic development in these areas,” added Mthinda.
The ceremony was marked by the official unveiling of the foundation stone, which
symbolized the commencement of the 18 months long project. It also featured a
comprehensive presentation by Eng. Emmanuel Chifuniro, who outlined the project
scope, key components, and its anticipated impact on communities.
Once completed, the project is expected to significantly increase water supply capacity,
improve service reliability, and positively transform livelihoods in Liwonde, Balaka, and
surrounding areas.
This initiative represents a major step towards achieving sustainable and equitable
access to safe water for all, in line with Malawi’s national development goals.
The Liwonde Balaka improvement of water supply is not the only project the SRWB is currently implementing, several similar ones are under construction namely: Mthumba and Nchalo in Chikwawa, Makanjira in Mangochi and Zomba town in Zomba districts respectively.
