The Honourable Minister of Water and Sanitation, Hon. Abida Sidik Mia MP, toured several establishments under the Southern Region Water Board.
Before the tour, the Minister was briefed on the Board’s status, including operations, infrastructure development, finances, and IT innovations currently being implemented. The Minister highlighted the importance of making potable water accessible and commended the Board for its achievements so far.
The Minister toured the new head office, which is set to improve service delivery to customers, stakeholders, and staff alike. She also visited the Bottling Plant, one of the Board’s reform areas aimed at enhancing revenue. The highlight of the tour in Zomba was the visit to Mulunguzi Dam, amidst declining water levels due to climate change and illegal tree cutting in the catchment area.
On Thursday, the Minister visited some of the projects being implemented in Chiradzulu and Luchenza. In Chiradzulu, the Board is drilling boreholes using its own resources to augment the existing water supply. In Luchenza, the Board, in partnership with Vitens Evides, is equipping the boreholes with solar power to ensure continuous access to potable water.
